Sports Massage

Sports Massage involves the management, maintenance and rehabilitation of soft tissue through the use of manipulation, massage and compression of soft and deep tissue muscle fibres.

Sports Massage as the name suggests is used by athletes and sports people to help them manage the effects of training and competition. It also helps to prevent injury, speed recovery after training and/or competing and optimise sporting performance.

Sports Massage can also greatly assist those from a non sporting background suffering from muscle tension and soreness. For example those who have a physically demanding job or suffer postural stress as a result of sitting for long periods of time.

Benefits of Sports Massage

Sports Massage offers a number of benefits including:

  • Relief from muscle soreness, tightness and tension
  • Increasing muscle flexibility, range of movement and strength through the stretching of muscle fibres and aiding their correct formation.
  • Increasing circulation to help with the removal of lactic acid helping to speed recovery after training or competition.
  • Increasing blood flow to expedite the natural healing of muscle fibres damaged as a result of training.
  • Aiding the breakdown and repair of any minor lesions and scar tissue of the muscle.
  • Helping in the prevention of injury by lessening the effects of muscle damage and preventing other muscle groups compensating and suffering subsequent injury.

Sports Massage Treatment

At the Medi-Train Centre we tailor the provision of Sports Massage to meet our Client’s individual needs. Sports Massage services offered include:

Maintenance Massage: involves the provision of massage treatment at regular spaced intervals concentrating on the treatment of muscles which are repetitively used by the Client whether it be as a result of training, participating in a particular sport or work related. Maintenance massage aids in the alleviation of muscle tension, maintains and helps improve muscle flexibility and range of movement and assists with injury prevention.

Event Massage: is used to help those involved in sport to either prepare for or recover from a competition:

  • Pre-Event Massage is used as part of the warm up process helping to reduce excess muscle tension and enhance muscle flexibility and range of movement.
  • Post-Event Massage is used to remove the build up of lactic acid from the muscles, reduce muscle stiffness and enhance the body’s own recovery process of healing damaged muscle fibres. This helps to both improve the ability to return to training quicker and reduce the risk of training injuries.

Rehabilitation Massage: where a client is undergoing Physiotherapy or Osteopathy, Sports Massage can be used in the latter stages to compliment these treatments. Your treating Clinician will advise you on the appropriateness of undergoing Sports Massage. Benefits provided by Sports Massage as a form of rehabilitative treatment include helping increase muscle flexibility and range of movement, alleviating residual muscle tension, breaking down scar tissue of the muscles and increasing blood circulation to the injured area.
